ABOUT THE FARM

ROSANNA’S GARDEN GROWS FRESH AND LOCAL PRODUCE RESPONSIBLY FOR SELDOVIA AND FOSTERS THE POSSIBILITY OF FOOD SECURITY AND SUSTAINABILITY IN THE PLACE WE LOVE.

Rosanna’s Story

Rosanna’s Garden was born through an intense love of gardening and growing things that was inherited from her Father, Uncle, Grandmother who homesteaded in Trapper Creek, and her Great Grandmother. As a child, Rosanna would help her Dad in the garden. Her Uncle is also a master gardener and she has fond memories of his sweet peas towering over her and of his greenhouse full of tomatoes that grew better because he played them classical music. She remembers feeling a sense of wonder and delight every time she got to visit his garden. When she moved back to Alaska as a single Mom, in 2004 she purchased her first home which sat on a piece of property that had a beautiful garden location. She has been growing on her land ever since.

In 2015 she received a grant from the USDA to purchase and build a high tunnel on her property. The tunnel expanded her ability to grow. In 2019 she injured the nerves in her ankles while hiking. While in recovery, Rosanna noticed that the pain in her feet would subside when her bare feet were touching the earth. This connection to gardening and her health led her to deepen her passion for the art of growing things. In 2020 a friend suggested she try selling her produce. It was an overwhelming hit which led to the creation of Seldovia’s first Farmers Market. In the Covid World of 2021, food security for the community of Seldovia came to the forefront and Rosanna became determined to build and grow the garden to help feed the community and to blaze a trail for other growers here in Seldovia. In doing so, Rosanna feeds more than people, she feeds her soul.
